New Roof Construction
Henrico Roofing for 3 generations has offered new roof construction services to architects, home builders, developers, and property owners. We are licensed, bonded and insured in the state of VA. We build with the following types of roofing: asphalt composition shingles, wood shake, metal/aluminum tile, concrete tile, clay tile, slate tile, metal or tin roofing, tar roofing and spray foam roofing. We work on single family homes, town homes, apartments, churches, stores, offices, and medical clinics.
Our Crews
Each crew is supervised by a crew leader with several years of experience in building roofs, and will review work to make sure high standards are carried through. Henrico Roofing employees attend (throughout the year) many training seminars, lectures and webinars to reinforce or update safety procedures and roofing installation instructions.
Roofing Components
We use well-known brands of roofing materials, such as GertainTeed, Tamko, Versico, Owens Corning, and GAF/ELK. These manufactures have multiple plants and produce shingles of varying levels of quality backed up by good warranties.
All components of a roof system are critical to the well being of the whole. One weak or badly installed component will prematurely destroy the roof, as well as, poor shingle quality. 75 % of complaints shingle manufactures receive turn out to be faults caused by installation errors.
Installation Errors
Installation error is the most common reason for roof leaks- not the quality of the shingle, such as:
- No covering on the edges of the roof (drip edge). This can cause rotting of the roof edges due to moisture infiltration. Plus, insects or critters will chew through a wooden roof’s edge to make their home in the attic- metal will stop this.
- Incorrect installation of starter shingles can cause moisture infiltration in the eaves and rakes.
- Incorrect installation of flashings (leak barrier) in the weak points of the roof, such as valleys, walls, vents, chimneys and skylights.
- Incorrect nailing of shingles, such as wrong placement, exposed nails, crooked, underdriven and overdriven.
- Ventilation: Proper attic ventilation will move the hot, humid, and polluted air out of the home while bringing in fresh air from the outside. Inadequate ventilation will cause heat and moisture to build up in the attic rotting the rafters and roof deck, and causing shingles to buckle and curl- prematurely aging the roofing system.
New Commercial Flat Roofs
Most large commercial building’s roofs are flat partly because mechanical building components (HVAC, fire sprinklers and firestops) can be placed on the flat roof making it easier to service them and increasing the usable space within the building. Plus, they are cheaper to build (less building material required), and less volume of useless attic space or space to pay taxes on.
Tar & Gravel or BUR (built up roofing system) have been built in the USA for more than 100 years. BUR systems are composed of alternating layers (3 to 5) of heavy roofing felt and hot asphalt or tar. These layers are installed directly on the roof and finished with a top coat of gravel or mica to protect the roof from storm damage, foot traffic, and to reflect the UV rays of the sun. These are the cheapest flat roofs to install, but also require a reinforced roof structure because they are so heavy. Tar and gravel roofs are rated by how many layers are installed.

Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing has been used as a roofing and insulating material for 50 years. Some foam roofs have been in place for decades, and can be expected to last decades more as long as they are maintained. Because the physical properties of a SPF Roof change little with age, how long the SPF roof system lasts depends primarily on the original application and its long-term maintenance (repairing damage due to outside forces quickly).
Roof Coating is a seamless roofing membrane applied as a fluid by either spraying or painting it on a clean surface. It has elastic properties that allow it to stretch and contract as the roof goes through seasons. Also, it is a waterproof white coating that will reflect as much as 92% of the Sun's rays away from the building- reducing the degrees inside the building by as much as 20 degrees.
Materials Lifespan
- Roof Coating- up to 20 years.
- Built Up Roof – 15 to 20 years.
- Spray-Foam – up to 20 years.
