Plastic Polymer (inorganic chemical compound formed from repeating structural units) Plastic Polymers have a long shelf life- though they do after several years become brittle and break down into small pieces they never actually go away. Many of these small pieces have formed a huge garbage dump (composed mostly of bits of plastic) within The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Gyres act like giant whirlpools and become a catchall for marine debris never letting them go once they’re pulled into the vortex. This is really a good reason to recycle plastics.

Positives of Plastic Polymer Roofing
Plastic Polymer roofing systems are made from recycled materials and are fully recyclable themselves. This is a huge positive for the ecosystem as when roofs, expected to be reliable for about 35 years, are torn off they won’t have to land in a dump. Note: Durability varies greatly by manufacture. There are some very thin fragile plastic shingles being made, but most quality roofers won't use them.
Light in weight, so roof support structures don’t have to be reinforced when replacing an older roof of a different roofing material.
They outlast most asphalt shingle and cedar shake roof.
No trees have been harmed in their production.
Fire Resistant
Negatives of Plastic Polymer Roofing
Lower insulation value.
Visually, they look like plain plastic tiles- not coming anywhere near replicating the fibrous texture or tones of cedar shakes.
Instead of providing a matte reflection of clay tile they look shiny which repels most people.
They cost about as much as a cedar shake or clay tile which puts them out of the price range of many families.
Composite Plastic Polymer Roofing
Composite shakes, shingles or tiles are made from a compound of plastic recycled materials and a mineral filler (ground up limestone) then mixed with plastic resins and colors. They do give the same look of cedar shakes, clay or slate tiles and have much longer lifespan 50 years with a warranty to match. They are one of the more expensive roofing materials available- about twice the cost of cedar shakes or clay tiles
