Concrete Roof Tiles are made in three basic styles Spanish S, low-profile tiles with a double-S-shape and flat tiles (designed to look like wood shakes or slates). The main attraction to these tiles are cost- they are half the price of clay tiles. However, clay tiles do keep their color longer and withstand the elements better- longer lasting.

Consequences of Weight
Asphalt shingles weigh 2.5 to 4 pounds per square foot, but concrete tiles weigh considerably more at 9 to 12 pounds per square foot. The structure of the dwelling needs to be reinforced, if necessary, to accommodate the extra weight of the concrete tile.
Colorfastness
The color of clay tile is not affected by exposure to the elements. Even though, concrete tiles are manufactured with pigment throughout the entire tile, the color will still fade with time with bleaching from the sun.
Lifespan and Durability
Objects made from fired clay can’t burn or rot which is why archaeologists so often dig them up- even though many are in pieces. Concrete, when made well, will last a long time, 30 to 50, whereas many clay roofs are still protecting inhabitants after 100 years or more. However, eventually concrete tiles will crumble especially in freeze and thaw climates. Also, concrete tile manufactures don’t recommend walking on the tiles due to a high probability of damage which is pretty much the same advise for clay tiles.
Efflorescence

The concrete tile will over time develop a chalky deposit on its surface called efflorescence. Efflorescence dulls the sheen of the tiles surface, but does not affect the structural integrity. After installation on a roof, the surface could be coated with a clear primer to protect against efflorescence.
